11-Digit mobile numbers soon

The Department of Telecommunications (DOT) has proposed a 11-digit mobile numbering system from January 1 to meet the needs of increasing subscribers, according to reports. A DOT note says, "The National Numbering Plan 2003 is amended for migration to 11-digit numbering plan in mobile services by prefixing digit '9' in existing two-digit PLMN access code". If this happens, the subscribers will have to prefix 9 to existing 10-digit number. For example, a number beginning with 9xxxxxxxxx will become 99xxxxxxxxx.
