RCom ties up with BBC for Radio service

Reliance Communications and BBC World Service on Friday announced a strategic alliance to offer live audio service through Reliance Mobile’s R-World value-added service platform. The new partnership will see BBC World Service content available live across India through the medium of mobile phones. Reliance subscribers will now be able to listen to BBC World Service news in a choice of five different languages. Reliance subscribers can access the BBC World Service Radio by dialling 51234378.

RCom to provide 35 streaming channels to GSM users

Reliance Communications (RCom) has partnered with Hyderabad-based Apalya Technologies to roll out 35 new live streaming channels for its GSM (global system for mobile) subscribers. Rcom will be using Apalya's Mimobi technology platform to provide its mobile services on its GSM network.The services will be branded as MimobiTV.

TATA DOCOMO launches GSM services

 Tata Docomo, the GSM brand of Tata Teleservices has announced commercial launch of its operations in Orissa. With this launch, the subscribers will now be able to enjoy the benefits of 'pay as you use'. The company also announced the introduction of the 'pay as you use' advantage for many of its value added services, including all its voice portals, 24-hour music, cricket commentary and voice chat.

Govt may hike FDI ceiling in telecom

The government may consider a proposal to raise the 74% foreign direct investment cap in the telecom sector, accordind to sources. The government last raised foreign direct investment (FDI) from 49% to 74% in March 2007 to increase investment in India's telecom sector. It took several years for the government to raise the FDI limit from 49% to 74%. In 2004, telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran had said India needed investments in infrastructure, pointing to nations that allowed 100% FDI in telecom. That year, finance minister P Chidambaram had proposed in the budget that the FDI limit in telecom should go up to 74%, but the Left parties opposed the move.

Government grants permission to 22 new TV channels

The  ministry of information and broadcasting today granted clearance to 22 new TV channels, including three CNBC TV 18 channels, viz, CNBC-TV 18 South, CNBC-TV 18 Gujarat and CNBC-TV 18 Channel 3. Other TV channels which received permission to operate are: City Pulse to be operated by Anoli Holdings Pvt Ltd; Media Rennaissance (by Krishnaswamy Associates); Awam (Krishna TV); Samaj, Mumbai News and Delhi News (Information TV Pvt Ltd); Rhythm (Vijayanthi Televentures P Ltd); Raj TV Asia (Raj Television Network Ltd); Kalaignar Asia (Kalaignar TV P Ltd); Paviter (Pavitar Entertainment P Ltd); E Live (Pride East Entertainments P Ltd); ABN-Andhra Jyothy (Amoda Broadcasting Co Ltd); Apna News (Priyamda Media P Ltd); Vedic (Vedic Broadcasting Ltd) and Fresh TV by Rama Associates Ltd.

Nokia launches eight megapixel handset ’N86’

Mobile handset maker Nokia announced the launch of eight megapixel handset Nokia N86 8MP on Tuesday. Priced at Rs 27,359, the new handset comes in a dual-slide design with 8 GB of internal memory that could hold up to 4000 images. N86 has a 28 mm wide angle Carl Zeiss Tessar lens and designed to excel in both light and low light conditions. The multimedia set with a 2.6 inch display also supports integrated FM transmitter and has up to 30 hours of music playback and dedicated music keys for non-stop music. The device also supports full sync capability with a PC and TV-out support for slideshows. In addition to it, it comes with dedicated gaming keys and 17 pre-loaded N-Gage game out of which customers can choose one license game for free.

Sony Ericsson launches Satio, Aino, and Yari

The top-end entertainment mobile phone Satio has a 12.1 megapixel camera, a 3.5-inch widescreen full touch display, and nHD (ninth High Definition).
